Q: Ron wants to know: I would like to know the status of his solo (with vocals) album. And, I would like to know the status of the track from the Arrival sessions with Jon on the lead. Will it be on a CD-5?
A: I am releasing a compilation of vocal songs and previously released on "Back to the Innocence", Aug 14th on One Way Records - "Anthology". It will have the mystery Journey song, cut off Arrival "Lose Myself" along with 2 new songs.
Q:Tom wants to know: Will we get a chance to hear the song you did lead vocals on -- that should have been selected for the CD?
A: See the answer above.
Q: Rhonda Wants to know: When you're not recording, writing, and touring, what are you interested in, other then being a husband, father and golfer?
A: The stock market interests me. Always something changing everyday. The technology section is fascinating. I love to read novels, "Atlas Shrugged" Anne Rand, the Frank McCourt books "Angela's Ashes", "Tis: A Memoir" and Child Psychology books. Shopping with Liz!
Q: Luvjrny wants to know: I am just wondering what would be the right age to get my child into piano lessons?
A: 7 years old. Maybe 6 if she's good at focusing, reading and concentrating.
Q: Rhonda wants to know: At the end of "Nothin' Comes Close" there are adlibs about Steve's red leather pants. How did it come about that the adlibs were left in?
A: Kevin Shirley left those after Deen and I finished the backgrounds. We were out there just being silly. Steve heard them and said "You're not leaving those in?" He said "Oh yes, I am."
Q: Rhonda wants to know: Would you do that sort of adlib stuff with your kids on your solo material?
A: Probably, if a song called for it.
Q: Carol wants to know: What do you enjoy most about being part of Journey, aside from the performances?
A: The fans! The connection The juice!
Q: Tom wants to know: What did you do between recording ARRIVAL so long ago and the recent shows? Did the band write additional material?
A: Yes, about 40 songs. Some are really good, maybe do an alias or something, don't know. I also attempted a Higher Octave Album that got rejected - Oh well!
Q: Rhonda wants to know: How did you prepare for this time on the road?
A: Got all my work done first, then enjoy and have fun!
Q: Rhonda wants to know: The last 2 tours were started in the midwest, Why are you starting this tour in the south? Heat??
A: Not sure. Nick Caris does the booking and it was just coincidental I think.
Q: Rhonda wants to know: Who is the neatest and the messiest person on the tour bus?
A: We're all about the same. Living and sharing a space like that, we respect it.
Q: Rhonda wants to know: During the shows, I've noticed a laptop with you on stage. What is its function?
A: It keeps track of all my 100's of keyboard sounds and effects, I use. It changes the "patches" every song via midi.
Q: Tom wants to know: What was your reaction to Sony requesting you work with outside collaborators for the new CD?
A: Far out, lets write dudes!
Q: Tom wants to know: Was the band happy with Kevin's production work? I think ARRIVAL is the best JRNY record in quite a long time, so I'm in favor of Kev's work, while others feel it's still too polished.
A: Yes. Kevin's work was great.
Q: Tom wants to know: Were you excited or disappointed with the selection of songs Kalodner made for recording ARRIVAL? Is there any way we'll be able to hear the 20 or so songs not selected?
A: At first I was not thrilled. He left out "Signs", "Alive Again" and "Kiss Me". We fought for a longer album and won!
Q: Tom wants to know: What was your feeling of the fans' initial reaction to the CD -- i.e., the ballad vs. rocker debate?
A: It was interesting. I think the label had to have the ballads for radio. The fans wanted it all though and in the end, we listened and I think we delivered.
Q: Tom wants to know: Do you feel the two or three days you spent on the two new songs for the CD were enough time to do them justice? Were you involved in the selection of the two songs?
A: Yes, we had time.
Q: Sylvia wants to know: Does Journey plan on making any videos with their new album?
A: Not right now at this point.
Q: Tom wants to know: Will the band be making an effort to get TV promotion (i.e., Letterman, Conan, Leno, Saturday Night Live, the summer concert series on NBC's Today Show (or ABC's GMA), etc.?
A: We are doing the Early Morning Show (show date July 16th) and taping a segment for CBS Market Watch.
Q: Paul wants to know: I wonder if you could ask JC whether Journey plans to tour Europe in support of Arrival and the UK/Ireland in particular?
A: Journey is probably going to tour Europe Oct 20th to Nov 30th. (Watch the website)
Q: Rhonda wants to know: You've mentioned that there will be several different set lists for this tour. Do you know yet how many there will be?
A: 12 to 15 different combinations.
Q: Rhonda wants to know: Will you be doing Just the Same Way and Anytime during this tour?
A: Yes, as well as "Feelin that Way".
Q: Sylvia wants to know: If he wouldn't have had a musical career-what would he have been doing and why?
A: Probably would have gone to a culinary academy to be a head chef, love to cook. It's a lot like writing songs, you know, or a psychologist: animal or child.
Q: Sylvia wants to know: What sports does he enjoy & who are his favorite teams?
A: I love golf and skiing. I enjoy horseback riding with my daughter Madison. My favorite teams are The Giants of San Francisco, The 49er's of S.F., The Penguins(Mario!) and The San Antonio Spurs.
Q: Sylvia wants to know: So many stars are talking about how they have no privacy because of their stardom--how does he feel about his stardom & how does he keep his private life so private?
A: I don't think my celebrity status is at "stardom" level. I can go just about anywhere and not be hassled. My life isn't what sells Star Magazine, People or US. I thank God for my semi-celebrity status as it allows freedom.
Q: Rhonda wants to know: What are your children's take on their dad being a "Rockstar"?
A: I'm not a rockstar so much, but a noted musician and songwriter. My kids love Journey (they sleep in Journey T's x-large), and play our music. They don't like their Dad stolen away for long periods of time. Someday they might not be such, big fans?
Q: Rhonda wants to know: What are Liz's reactions when she see women "Gushing" over you?
A: She's proud of my accomplishments and knows that this stuff goes with the job I do. I'm forever hers "faithfully".
Q: Rhonda wants to know: After 20 years "Open Arms" is still a very popular wedding song, what are your feelings about the timelessness of Journey's music?
A: Grateful and proud. I'm still in awe of the destiny and power songs can have.
Q: Todd wants know: If you had the chance to make a duet with another artist.....who would you choose?
A: Faith Hill! She's awesome!
Q: Kiddcin@cs.com wants to know: Do you and Steve Perry still write songs together, if so is there a chance that we will one day hear any of them?
A: No, and probably not.
Q: Mary Ann wants to know: "When you and Liz co-write songs together as you did for tunes on the Arrival CD, do you write the music and Liz the lyrics or do you share in each of these functions, and can we expect more songs co-written by you two together in the future?
A: She has lyrics and I do melody and lyrics. Her instincts are very good, so she definitely has input overall on how the song flows. We will write some more again.
Q: Rhonda wants to know: Liz's collaborating with you, how did this come about?
A: Liz loves music and she always loved to write her feelings. She has inspired songs of mine "Something Sacred", "Just the Thought of Losing You", "Loved By You". She had the title "With Your Love", from a friends wedding that inspired her to write.
Q: Debbie wants to know: How's the sheet music collection coming?
A: Don't know, but I'm still looking. I may just have to do it myself.
Q: Sylvia wants to know: Does he plan on making any videos for his album "For a Lifetime"?
A: No, not in the budget.
Q: Butterfly wants to know: I would LOVE to see you write a ballet!! Any possibility??
A: I wrote a piece of music inspired by my daughter's ballet classes.
Q: Rhonda wants to know: Is Body Language still your favorite CD of your solos?
A: Yes it is.
Q: Rhonda wants to know: Of your solo and your Journey songs which song right now is closest to your heart?
A: "Loved By You"
Q: Rhonda wants to know: Do you do your songwriting by hand or do you use the aid of a computer?
A: I write songs on a legal pad, then as I get close to finishing them. I'll copy my scribble so I can get a feel for what I did.
Q: Tom wants to know: Why was World Gone Wild dropped from the VO tour, and later Good Time Tonight as well? Why were they chosen in the first place? Were either "Higher Place" or "All the Way" written yet?
A: The record company hated it, John Koladner really. "Higher Place" was not yet written and "All the Way" had been written and was in the can. Neal wasn't so sure about that one in the beginning.
Q: Tom wants to know: Will you get Ross and Deen involved in the future songwriting?
A: Maybe, if there's something that works.
Q: JohnD wants to know: Can you give us an idea (hint) of any early (obscure) Journey songs you
are considering, or perhaps, rehearsing for the Arrival tour? Hint: I really hope to hear PRECIOUS TIME! Who would play harmonica, if you did this song? Thanks for any consideration.
A: No "Precious Time" this time. Maybe next Feb or March? "Mother, Father", "Rubicon".
Q: Rhonda wants to know: The fans have been giving their reviews of the CD, what is your review of the Arrival CD?
A: Classic Journey with a few twists here and there. Strong ballads and bluesy rockers. Something for everyone!
Q: Rhonda wants to know: With the explosion of the internet over the past 4 years, you have been getting instant feedback on what the fans think. How do you then incorporate that into what the fans will see or get?
A: We have changed the U.S. album cover as a reaction to the fans. We added 2 extra songs to Arroval and we've played the most popular songs requested in the Tour poll I and II.
Q: Don wants to know: I always think of Journey as Johnathan Cain, Neil Schon, Steve Smith, Steve Perry, and Ross Valory. Will we ever see this line up again?
A: ? I don't know.
Q: Don wants to know: Assuming Steve (Perry) ever gets his medical situation straightened out and would not be opposed to touring, would he be welcomed back or are those bridges forever burned?
A: I don't know
Q: Tracy wants to know: Jonathan where do you get the artistic shirts that you wear on stage?
A: Jean Paul Gautier
